Types of Dental Crowns

Types Of Dental Crowns Kenosha WI | Denthetics LLC | Restorative Dentist Kenosha WIDenthetics, LLC treats many patients with dental crowns at our Kenosha dental office. A crown is a cap for the tooth used to save badly damaged or deteriorated teeth. In addition, Dr. Mata-Stein will sometimes use dental crowns to support a dental bridge. Our Kenosha cosmetic dentist will discuss the various types of dental crowns and is available to answer more questions on the benefits of each. The types of dental crowns include metal or gold alloy, ceramic, and porcelain-fused crowns. At Denthetics, LLC, we offer patients ceramic and porcelain dental crowns for function and a smile that blends naturally.

Why Dental Crowns?

Crowns provide strength to the tooth and can blend with the surrounding teeth if done with cosmetic-grade materials. Dental crowns are also used as part of the dental implant procedure.

Types of Dental Crowns

Know that when it comes to crowns, there is no one “best” crown. Instead, many dental crowns offer different benefits and potential drawbacks, which you should consider. Before deciding on a final type of crown, it’s essential to consult with our expert Kenosha cosmetic dentist at Denthetics, LLC to discuss the best course of treatment.

Gold Alloy Crowns

Gold alloy dental crowns are made entirely of metal. The most common option is the classic gold crown; however, silver-colored metals are available. They’re chosen for their superior strength since they’re 100% metal. Gold alloy crowns also offer the best longevity: The chance of any repair or replacement is almost zero. However, the main disadvantage is the color: It doesn’t look natural. Therefore, it’s best for anterior teeth, which are less visible. Make sure you do not have a metal allergy, but beyond that, there are a few drawbacks. Gold alloy crowns are ideal for patients who need work in the back of their mouth and want the most long-lasting dental crown possible; it’s also ideal if you don’t care particularly about how natural the final product looks.

Ceramic Crowns

Most commonly used for restoring front teeth, ceramic crowns are known for blending in with your natural tooth color. All-ceramic or all-porcelain dental crowns are the best option for people with metal allergies and those who want their dental crowns to look as close to their original teeth as possible. However, metal crowns are more durable. In addition, ceramic crowns are ideal for your front teeth that show most prominently (incisors and canines).

Porcelain fused-to-metal crowns

While these are not as aesthetically pleasing as ceramic crowns, PFM crowns are full casts with porcelain fused onto most (or all) of the tooth). A hybrid of porcelain and metal crowns is the preferred option since they can blend perfectly with your teeth. PFM crowns are strong and last many years; however, you will lose some of your tooth structure due to their metal base. These are a good fit for patients with no gum disease who want a dental crown that lasts for years.

Base Metal Alloy Crowns

Base metal alloy crowns require the least amount of your healthy teeth to be removed. Base metal alloy crowns are composed of non-noble metals that can resist corrosion, creating a durable crown. For temporary crowns, stainless steel or aluminum is used; nickel, chromium, or iron may be used for more permanent crowns. These are a good match for molars that are out of sight or are less visible. While the more affordable option, choosing a high noble dental alloy, is recommended.

While the procedure varies slightly based on the type of dental crown used, the general process involves our Kenosha dentist, Dr. Mata-Stein examining the tooth that needs the crown to ensure it’s not at risk of infection or decay. If there is a risk, you may require a root canal. Then, Dr. Mata-Stein files down the tooth so there’s room for the crown (all metal crowns require less removal of healthy tooth structure.) We may also build up the tooth’s structure if more is needed. We’ll then make an impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth and send them to a lab for manufacturing. Our dentist, Dr. Mata-Stein will place a temporary crown in the meantime.

When you return, your cosmetic dentist will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent dental crown. You can also ensure the new crown is perfect before we begin the procedure. We will then use a numbing agent while cementing the new crown into place and then you’re all ready to go.
